Wheels of Love - Alyn International Charity Bike Ride

Volunteer Information

Wheels of Love is particularly unusual as the Ride was created by a small group of avid cyclists – all generously volunteering their time, passion and expertise. Adecade later the Ride can still boast that it remains volunteer-based and  that in 2009 an amazing 70% of all funds raised went directly to ALYN Hospital. Volunteers participate in every aspect of the Ride; they create the route, organize the Ride, manage the web site, prepare the maps. . . etc.

The bike riders who are drawn to this annual event all share a passion for Israel, cycling and tikkun olam (creating a better world). They are wonderful people and during the five day Ride THEY require the support from the volunteers who also share their passions. The efforts of the volunteers during the Ride really do make a significant contribution to the  overall success of the Ride.

The 11th WOL Ride will start early Sunday morning, October 24 2010, and end late Thursday afternoon, October 28th in Jerusalem.

GalgALYN – the one day Ride, will join the five day Ride on Thursday October 28th.

Registration for riders and volunteers for the 2010 Ride, will open on-line June 1st.

On Thursday evening, October 21st there will be a mandatory meeting for all volunteers.

Help is appreciated the last few days before the Ride when riders check in at ALYN.

Participants are to choose their preferred route while registering. Due to logistical considerations riders will not be able to switch routes during the week of the Ride.

Obtaining Sponsored Donations

Each volunteer on the WOL Ride commits to raise a minimum of $500 but the majority of past participants set their own high goals and have surpassed them consistently. It is important to mention that close to 70% of money raised from WOL 2009 went directly to bridge the financial gap of the ALYN Hospital and promises the continuity of treatment for these children at the highest level of quality that they so richly deserve.

The participants obtain the donations from family, friends, business colleagues, corporate sponsors, and through a variety of creative ideas such as a stand-up comedy show, a concert, an art show and more. (See Guide to Obtaining Sponsored Donations)

Available on the website for your use are sample letters and a WOL presentation .

Volunteering Options

If for any reason you cannot go on the Ride itself, or it is just not your thing, you can volunteer for the Ride in our Jerusalem office. There are often clerical jobs that we could use help with, such as filing and follow-up phone calls. As well, the week before the Ride we need a large number of volunteers to help set-up and work at our check-in stations. To help in the office, please email Marcia Goldlist.

VCR

A VCR is a Volunteer Captain of the Route. Each route will have a VCR. The VCR will be chosen from amongst the volunteers before the Ride. They will be involved even before the Ride starts in preparations and therefore must be Israeli residents.

Typical Volunteers

In the past volunteers have come from Israel, Canada, U.S.A, Australia and Belgium!

No matter where you come from, we can use your help!!

Each year, we attract volunteers of all ages. They typically range in age from high school seniors to adults in their 60's and 70's. The minimum age to participate as a volunteer is 18.
